TEDx Stage Design
Scenography design for a TEDx event at FYCMA Málaga inspired by Ikigai
context
ROJOmandarina designed the stage for TEDxMálaga 2024, held at FYCMA Auditorium under the theme “IKIGAI.” The project draws from the Japanese idea of purpose in life to shape a piece of ephemeral stage design able to support both talks and live performances.
The set needed to work with TEDx’s visual identity — especially the iconic red circle — while introducing a spatial language of its own. The result is a minimal composition inspired by Japanese references, developed to balance symbolism, production logic and lighting versatility.
Client: TEDxMálaga
Capabilities: space design – spatial design – scenography – fabrication – ephemeral architecture
Sector: event – cultural
challenge
The main challenge was to turn an abstract idea such as Ikigai into a stage set that felt clear, present and buildable. It had to frame the central TEDx speaking area without taking it over, while keeping enough open space for a changing live programme.
There was also a technical requirement behind the concept: the set had to respond well to different lighting moods, colour temperatures and intensities, so the same structure could move from calm and reflective scenes to more dynamic moments throughout the event.
solution
The design is built around five scenic gateways inspired by Japanese architecture and symbolism. Each element represents a stage within the journey towards Ikigai: the central gateway as the core of purpose, the torii as a threshold between the everyday and the meaningful, and the blossoming tree as a sign of growth and personal evolution.
In material terms, the set combines wood, fabric and light to create lightweight structures with a calm visual presence. References to shoji screens are translated into clean geometries and light-responsive surfaces, allowing both ambient lighting and backlighting to define each piece without overloading the stage.
result
The final stage creates a readable spatial narrative: five elements arranged as a path towards purpose, with the “Ikigai” piece at the centre and the side structures suggesting transition, choice and growth. The set supports the content rather than competing with it, while giving the event a clear visual identity.
Its simple material palette and flexible lighting strategy allowed the atmosphere to shift across the programme, from introspective moments to more energetic scenes. Rather than illustrating the concept too literally, the project gives it presence through space, rhythm and restraint.
The project also received the Clap Platinum Award 2024 in the Industrial Design category for best commercial exhibition or ephemeral architecture design, acknowledging its ability to turn an editorial theme into a strong stage experience.
